Metro Manila Coastal Cleanup 2011

Marine and aquatic debris is among the world’s most pervasive pollution problem affecting our waters today. The litter may be as varied as the products available in the global marketplace, but all share a common origin. Somewhere, somehow, someone mishandled it – either deliberately or thoughtlessly.

The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a global volunteer-based initiative to reduce impacts of marine debris which contributes to climate change and biodiversity loss. Each year, volunteers have been mobilized to form a “litter army” to clean the waterways and collect information on the sources of debris for education or pollution prevention campaigns. To sustain this initiative, we are in need of volunteers to clean our waterways (esteros), shorelines, lakes, surface of adjacent seas and underwater areas.

The 26th International Coastal Cleanup will be held simultaneously worldwide on the third Saturday, September 17, 2011. For this year, the Department of Tourism in celebration of World Tourism Day through the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD) shall be coordinating all ICC activities.

In this regard, we would like to invite EVERYONE to join this environmental event. In Metro Manila, cleanup sites will be at Baywalk, Roxas Blvd. and the Las Piñas Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) or the Freedom Island. Registration will be at 6-7 am and cleanup will end at 12 noon. This is free and voluntary. Please bring plastic gloves, water, hat, and alcohol. The Manila Fire Department will provide water for washing.

For more information on the how to join, please contact: Ms. Lilian Reyes at ICC Philippines (632) 418-07-60 0919-313-00-90/ or Gerry Reyes at 524-22-42 (DOT - PCSSD) / (0916) 411-64-46.
