"TURN THE TIDE ON TRASH!"

Trash has infiltrated all reaches of our ocean, causing innumerable impacts to people, water quality, marine wildlife and economies and also one of the sources contributing to climate change. However, there is good news - ocean trash can be prevented by tackling trash at the source before it has a chance to reach the water.

Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a global volunteer-based initiative geared towards reducing the impacts of marine debris. Celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September, ICC mobilizes a multitude of volunteers from more than 90 countries and states to cleanup trash and debris from beaches/shorelines, rivers, lakes and waterways and to raise environmental awareness.

Last year, there were 182, 408 volunteers nationwide who joined the ICC. They collected 794,181 kilograms of trash over 446 kilometers of beaches, rivers, waterways and underwater areas.

What is unique about ICC? Volunteers don’t just cleanup but they are also tasked to record information on each trash collected on a standardized Ocean Trash Data Form. The Trash Index produced will provide us item-by-item, location-by-location accounting of what’s trashing our oceans. Likewise, information gathered will guide and influence governments, corporations and industries in developing smart solutions to the marine debris problem.

On September 20, 2014, Saturday from 7:00 AM to 11:00AM, everyone is invited to join the 29th International Coastal Cleanup. Please visit our website to register and details on how to organize a Cleanup, orientation slideshows and ICC materials to download. No registration fee.
