International Coastal Cleanup Advisory on Cancellation of Sept. 17 ICC Day

Image
TO ALL PARTICIPANTS OF THE 2016 INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY: In light of the recent bombing in Davao City, the proclamation by the President of a state of national emergency and government intelligence reports as to the existence of threats of further acts of violence, the PCGA and the ICC-Philippines, being the designated co-coordinators of the International Coastal Cleanup in the Philippines, have decided to cancel all activities, preparations and plans in the celebration of this year’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day on Saturday, 17 September 2016 in all parts of the country. Given the public nature of the ICC Day, several interested groups may take advantage of these nationwide gatherings to sow terror in order to gain international media mileage in the process.  Certainly, the PCGA and the ICC-Philippines recognize that preparations, logistics and publicity requirements are already in place at this time. However, as the safety and security...

The ever-increasing ocean trash – plastic waste in particular – has produced nothing less than a global crisis for ocean waters, marine wildlife and habitat, human health and safety, wasted resources and lost revenues for many nations. Fortunately, this is one environmental issue that can be addressed by tackling trash at the source before it has a chance to reach the water and by changing the behaviors that allow trash into the water in the first place. International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) provides the opportunity to make a difference in a global movement by getting rid of trash/debris from our shorelines, rivers, lakes and waterways; raising environmental awareness; and providing information which will guide and influence governments, corporations and industries in developing smart solutions to the marine debris problem. ICC is the largest volunteer-based initiative of the Ocean Conservancy, a non government organization based in Washington, D.C., USA. Last year, about 562,...

More than 107,000 Filipinos joined the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup

Image
More than 107,000 Filipinos joined the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) last September 20 & 27, 2014. Although total participation went down by 29% due to a weather disturbance, we are acknowledged as one of the top ten countries in the 2014 ICC.  Cleanup volunteers poured in beaches, coasts, rivers, waterways and underwater seas from 29 provinces and 350 cleanup sites to participate in this symbolic event. Zambales was No. 1 among top ten provinces in terms of volunteer turnout, followed by Cebu, NCR, Batangas, Surigao del Sur, Pangasinan, Cavite, Negros Occidental, Quezon and Catanduanes.  An estimated 14,828 bags of trash weighing 189,245.54 kilos were collected and 287.04 kilometers covered during beach/shoreline, waterway, underwater and watercraft cleanups. Of the total categorized debris items collected, about 67% belonged to the “Top Ten Debris” – a list of the most prevalent trash found in all the cleanups. Food wrappers (41%), cigarette butts ...

2013 beach cleanup in Olongapo City, Zambales "TURN THE TIDE ON TRASH!" Trash has infiltrated all reaches of our ocean, causing innumerable impacts to people, water quality, marine wildlife and economies and also one of the sources contributing to climate change. However, there is good news - ocean trash can be prevented by tackling trash at the source before it has a chance to reach the water. Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a global volunteer-based initiative geared towards reducing the impacts of marine debris. Celebrated every year on the third Saturday of September, ICC mobilizes a multitude of volunteers from more than 90 countries and states to cleanup trash and debris from beaches/shorelines, rivers, lakes and waterways and to raise environmental awareness. Last year, there were 182, 408 volunteers nationwide who joined the ICC. They collected 794,181 kilograms of trash over 446 kilometers of beaches, rivers, waterways and underwa...

On-line Data Submission 2013 ICC

Image
During the 2013 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) held last September 21, cleanup volunteers have seen all kinds of trash washed out to shores, from unique items like toothbrushes, slippers, umbrellas and handbags to the ubiquitous food wrappers and plastic bags. They recorded every item listed in a data card to help build comprehensive solutions for trash free seas. Although ICC is just a one day event, volunteers have made a meaningful difference in the health and vitality of our seas, rivers and lakes. Cleanup volunteers may submit the results of the cleanup together with pictures and stories through the following: Email: iccphilippines@gmail.com On-line:  https://sites.google.com/site/iccphilippines/on-line-data-submission_2013
